NHS students provide free tax help to those in need

Thanks to the dedication and talent of our 32 volunteers, roughly 1,000 local families and individuals received free tax preparation this year at one of Nashua’ s three Volunteer Return Preparation Program sites which are coordinated by the Greater Nashua Asset Building Coalition.

Over the last two years, the GNABC has integrated the Nashua High School financial services class into the volunteer program. This year four students, Aileen Castillo, Maryellen Anderson, Puja Shah and Laura Duston, from Paul Pollard’s financial services class volunteered their time, talent and assistance at the Nashua tax locations.

“We are so thankful for the students’ service and for Mr. Pollard’s dedication to introduce and integrate real financial community service into the classroom” said Joy Barrett, Economic Opportunity Center program coordinator. It is a win-win situation; the students provide valuable tax assistance services in our community, while we offer them the opportunity to experience real world career models.

Each year the GNABC organizes free tax preparation services to low/moderate income individuals and families at the Nashua Public Library, Triangle Credit Union and Southern New Hampshire Services Inc.’s Economic Opportunity Center. In addition to providing this valuable tax service, GNABC educates individuals and families about their eligibility to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit and connect them to asset building programs such as the Individual Development Account and financial literacy education.
