How to Volunteer
Volunteer Roles
As a volunteer preparer, your primary goal is to provide quality service to eligible taxpayers. Volunteers must maintain taxpayer confidentiality, ensure that each return is prepared correctly, and effectively interview taxpayers to gather necessary information.
Volunteers need not have a professional background or any previous experience in order to assist. The only requirements for volunteering are a willingness to work with people and numbers, participation in the training program, and availability for at least four daytime hours per week during the 10-week program (February through mid-April).
To become a VITA volunteer, you must complete a senior-level tax accounting course and take and pass the VITA certification exam. |
